Chicago's
Wacker Drive is the location of one of the city's premier showcase sites--at
the bend in the Chicago River where both the roadway and the main channel
of the waterway turn south. Here, in a joint venture with The Equitable
Life Assurance Society of the United States, Mr. Klutznick erected 333
West Wacker Drive, a 36-story office building that rises with tremendous
confidence from its triangular base. The structure's northwest side, nearly
three curving acres of banded green glass, sweeps dramatically in a 365-foot-wide
arc that follows the curving street and river. And there is almost as
much glass on the complex faceted sides that face the Loop. Maximizing
the location's overlooked potential, 333 West Wacker Drive, which was
cited for its contribution to the state of the art of structural engineering,
sparked a developmental renaissance along Wacker Drive.
